I have just finished reading The Girl You Left Behind by Jojo Moyes and since I love talking about books and my other half does not I thought I would tell everybody else about it! Summary
Review Without sounding gushing and like a complete novice (ahem) I thought this book was brilliant. It was heart warming and life affirming but at the same time it didn't hesitate to highlight the horrors of the war for the people fighting the battle at the front and for the people left behind. I know there are a lot of history books and novels about the first and second world wars but it seemed to be like this one offered a fresh perspective (well as fresh as it could be). It dived into the complexities of living in a town full of your enemy and how seeing them as human in any way could easily turn others, people who you thought were on your side against you. Who is the actual enemy? Who is really unforgiving and cruel? These questions are also raised in Liv's story.
In both of the stories, the women are living through something terrible but they are far from maudlin. They are resourceful and strong and they will fight for what they want. As hard as their journey is you cheer for them all they way through and the main focus isn't on romance or what a man can do for them. It is about their lives and their choices. A brilliant book that can have you in tears but makes you look at things from different perspectives. Go on read it! You will not regret it.
